The fire departments were able to bring the fire at the conveyor belt in Elgg ZH under control. However, extinguishing work was still ongoing on Saturday morning.
They are expected to be completed in the afternoon, said Florian Frei, media spokesman for the Zurich cantonal police, on Saturday morning at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency. As the affected buildings cannot yet be entered, the cause of the fire remains unclear.
Some of the residents who had to be evacuated due to the smoke were expected to be able to return to their homes in the afternoon, Frei continued. Accommodation would be organized for the remaining people together with the municipality.
According to the media spokesperson, the damage to property remains difficult to estimate. A total of five to six buildings caught fire. Cars were also affected. It is still unclear how many other buildings were damaged by the heat.
The emergency call was received by the fire department at 00.20 a.m., as the cantonal police reported early on Saturday morning. The house in the village center was fully engulfed in flames when the emergency services arrived and the fire had spread to the neighboring buildings. No one was injured.
