A 23-year-old football fan had to answer to the Zurich District Court on Tuesday morning for throwing a flare. He said that he had not intended to hit anyone with the flaming torch and demanded an acquittal.

The incident took place during the Zurich city football derby between FC Zurich and GC Zurich at Letzigrund Stadium on October 23, 2021. Around 60 FCZ supporters stormed onto the pitch and towards the GCZ fan sector at the end of the match.

According to the public prosecutor's office, burning sea rescue flares were thrown in the direction of the GC fans. The accused should be sentenced to a conditional prison sentence of 22 months for attempted grievous bodily harm.

The FCZ fan admitted throwing the torch. However, he did not want to hurt anyone, he said in court.

According to his lawyer, the flare landed on the tartan track in front of the GCZ fan sector. No one could have been injured there, which is why the 23-year-old should be acquitted. The court will announce the verdict on Tuesday morning.
