The 15-year-old teenager who attacked an orthodox Jewish man in Zurich on 2 March became radicalized in Tunisia and on internet forums. This was stated by Zurich's security director Mario Fehr (independent) on Monday.
Investigations are still in full swing, Fehr said at the presentation of Zurich's crime statistics. It is now reasonably clear where the teenager became radicalized. "There is a strong connection to Tunisia", said Fehr.
The teenager had lived in Tunisia for four years, between 2017 and 2021. Another important factor was the radicalizing internet forums in which he spent a lot of time.
"It doesn't help if we call it something else"
Fehr once again described the knife attack on the Jewish-Orthodox man from Zurich as a terrorist attack. "It doesn't help if we call it something else." He also reiterated his call for stricter juvenile criminal law.
This is "not simply bad". In the case of serious acts of violence, however, it would be appropriate to tighten it up. He also considers the revocation of citizenship to be sensible in such cases. "I don't see why we as a society always have to take responsibility for everything that happens anywhere in the world."
The 15-year-old Swiss national with a Tunisian migration background is in custody until further notice. On the evening of March 2, he attacked a 50-year-old Jew with a knife and seriously injured him. In a video in Arabic, the teenager declared his allegiance to the Islamic State (IS).
