The public prosecutor's office in Ticino has launched a criminal investigation following a traffic accident in which Ticino State Councillor Norman Gobbi was involved. The proceedings are intended to clarify whether a criminal offense was committed in connection with the incident and during the subsequent investigation.
Gobbi's lawyer confirmed on Tuesday that the investigation was about the Council of State, that it was involved in the accident under investigation, but that it bore no responsibility for it. In his statement, the lawyer noted "with satisfaction" that the investigation had been opened.
According to media reports from Ticino, the Lega politician and head of the cantonal justice and police department was not named in the accident report. His alcohol level is also said to have been too high during the first test.
According to a statement from the public prosecutor's office on Tuesday, the case concerns an accident that occurred near Stalvedro on November 14, 2023. It is being investigated whether a criminal offense was committed afterwards. Specifically, there are allegations of abuse of authority and favoritism. The possible criminal offenses concern a cantonal police officer and an unknown person.
The Ticino State Council announced on Tuesday afternoon that it had taken note of the opening of the criminal proceedings. The government will initiate disciplinary proceedings against the cantonal police officer, according to the statement.
Gobbi's personal assistant only confirmed to the Keystone-SDA news agency that the government councillor was involved in an accident in November. No one was injured.
Interpellation pending in parliament
According to information from Gobbi's employee, the cantonal councillor was the "victim" of the accident and had also alerted the police himself. There has been much speculation in the Ticino media over the past few days and weeks as to why Gobbi was not subsequently listed in the accident report. According to media reports, the second alcohol test was again "within the norm".
Politicians have also already taken action. The leader of the Center Party parliamentary group in the Ticino cantonal parliament submitted an interpellation with numerous questions on March 13. A quick answer is not to be expected. The pending parliamentary initiatives will remain suspended until the end of the criminal proceedings, as announced by the State Council.
