Following the heavy rainfall in Ticino, the level of Lake Lago Maggiore has risen significantly: by more than twenty centimetres since Saturday evening, as reported by MeteoSwiss on Sunday. The weather service expects a moderate risk of flooding over the course of Monday.

The water level also rose on Lake Lugano, but to a much lesser extent. The levels of both lakes are likely to rise further. According to the latest MeteoSwiss assessment, predicted heavy rainfall could lead to dynamic increases in discharge, particularly on the Maggia.

The experts also predicted significant increases in discharge for other rivers on the southern side of the Alps, such as the Ticino. The runoff peaks are expected to be reached early Monday morning.

Since the start of the precipitation on Friday morning, more than 50 millimetres of rain have fallen between Locarno TI, the Saas-Fee VS region, the Gotthard and the Leventina, and locally as much as 100 to 120 millimetres.
