In the canton of Basel-Stadt, the successor to Beat Jans' seat on the cantonal government will be elected today, Sunday. It will be a race between the SP and FDP. In the general election in Thurgau, the SP and SVP want to defend the seats of their retiring councillors.

The ballot in Basel-Stadt is a second round of voting. Former National Councillor Mustafa Atici wants to defend his SP seat on the executive of the city canton. His rival, Luca Urgese, wants to bring the Free Democrats back into the government council.

Following the election of Beat Jans (SP) to the Federal Council in December 2023, it will not only be necessary to fill the vacant seat on the cantonal government, but also to appoint a new chair. The incumbent Director of Education Conradin Cramer (LDP), whose election is as good as secured due to a lack of serious competition, is standing for election.

However, the outcome of the race for the government seat is still open. Atici was around 3800 votes ahead of Urgese in the first round of voting and now also has the support of the Green Party candidate, who withdrew from the race. Urgese, on the other hand, can count on votes from all conservative parties including the SVP.

General elections in Thurgau

Voters in the canton of Thurgau are reappointing their government and parliament. The SVP, SP, Greens, EVP and Aufrecht are vying for the two seats vacated by Monika Knill (SVP) and Cornelia Komposch (SP), who are stepping down. The three current councillors Walter Schönholzer (FDP), Urs Martin (SVP) and Dominik Diezi (center) are running for re-election.

The composition of Thurgau's five-member government shows remarkable continuity. Since the 1980s, there has been a magic formula that has so far withstood all attacks: The SVP claims two seats, the FDP, the Center Party and the SP one each. It would come as no surprise if this constellation were to remain in place for another four years.

1016 people are running for the 130 seats in the Thurgau Grand Council in the five districts. The SVP is currently by far the strongest party (45 seats), followed by the FDP (18) and the Center Party (18). Since the "climate elections" four years ago, the SP has only been the fifth strongest party with 14 seats behind the Greens, who gained 6 seats at the time and have since had 15 members of parliament.
