A 42-year-old Frenchman has been caught at Geneva airport customs trying to import mostly counterfeit luxury watches and two brand-name bags into Switzerland without declaring them. He has to pay several tens of thousands of francs in fees and fines.
The man arrived in Geneva on a flight from London at the beginning of the month. When he passed through customs, he only declared two watches. However, a search of his suitcase by customs officials revealed that the man had a lot to hide.
When checking the luggage, customs discovered 18 watches and two bags containing luxury leather goods. An investigation revealed 13 watches to be counterfeits, as the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS) announced on Tuesday. Of the remaining five genuine watches, the traveler had only declared two. He had also not declared the luxury bags.
According to the BAZG, the value of the goods amounts to several hundred thousand francs and the amount of money owed to tens of thousands of francs. The person will also be fined for violating the Customs Act and the Value Added Tax Act and will be charged with violating the Trademark Protection Act.
