Zurich Airport with significantly more passengers in March too

Zurich Airport again handled significantly more passengers in March than in the same month last year. A total of 2.34 million passengers traveled through Switzerland's largest airport in March. This was 12.4 percent more than in the same month last year, as the airport announced on Thursday evening.
The airport benefited from the early Easter, which was in March this year. Passenger numbers over the Easter period were within expectations of around 90,000 people per day. Together with the spring, summer, fall and Christmas vacations, Easter is one of the busiest and busiest times for passengers at Zurich Airport.
Overall, the airport came close to pre-pandemic levels in March: The number of passengers was 96.6% of the March 2019 level.
Almost two thirds were local passengers. 34 percent of travelers changed planes in Zurich.
In addition, more flights were operated than in March 2023. The number of flight movements rose by 8% year-on-year to 20,039 take-offs and landings. The gap to the level before the coronavirus crisis in March 2019 is still around 9 percentage points.
Machines slightly fuller
On average, 134 passengers were seated on an aircraft. This is 2% more than in the previous year. The seat occupancy rate fell by 0.3 percentage points to 79.6%.
The airport also handled 39,738 tons of freight in March. This corresponds to an increase of 11.9% compared to the same month last year. However, compared to March 2019, i.e. before the coronavirus pandemic, almost 6 percent less freight was handled.
And people spent more money in the airport's stores and restaurants. Compared to the previous year, commercial turnover increased by 9.1 percent to 49.1 million francs. With an increase of 10.9 percent, sales on the "airside", i.e. after the security check, rose more strongly than those on the "landside", which increased by 7 percent, according to the figures.
