The 19th edition of the Steps dance festival begins in Baden AG on Wednesday evening. A total of ten contemporary works from Switzerland and abroad will be performed in 34 theaters throughout Switzerland during the almost four-week event.
The festival opens at the Kurtheater Baden. Norwegian choreographer and director Alan Lucien Øyen and his company Winter Guests are appearing on Swiss stages for the first time, as the organizers wrote in a press release. The performance "Story, story, die" explores the question of what people do in the analog and digital world in order to be liked.
Steps also begins in French-speaking Switzerland on April 25. The Comédie de Genève presents the world premiere of "Kantik" by Swiss choreographer Perrine Valli, which explores the complexity of sexuality. Things get underway in Lugano on April 28: the dance theater group Kidd Pivot performs "Assembly Hall" by Canadians Crystal Pite and Jonathon Young. The piece explores people's need to belong.
Thematically, the works range from the personal to debates about society as a whole. The program also includes screenings especially for families: "The Whispering Bags" by Lausanne director Yasmine Hugonnet and "The Others" by Belgian Anton Lachky.
According to those responsible, the aim of the program is to provide an insight into the diversity of contemporary dance theater in all regions. Dancing also takes place in Schaffhausen, Vals GR and Hauterive NE. The dance festival has been held every two years since 1988. Steps is organized by Migros Culture Percentage and runs until 19 May.
