The fan stand in Geneva will remain closed for Servette's next home match against FC Winterthur. This was decided by the Geneva licensing authority. This is in response to pyrotechnics being thrown and rioting by Servette supporters in Winterthur.
The city and cantonal licensing authorities met on Tuesday at the request of the city of Winterthur, as announced by its working group. They condemned the violence in and around the stadium in Winterthur on Sunday in the strongest possible terms and classified it as serious.
The Geneva licensing authority is therefore closing the north stand of the "Stade de Genève" for Geneva's next home game against FC Winterthur on Saturday. In addition, the match will reportedly take place on probation. New measures will be taken in the event of further excesses, wrote the working group of the licensing authorities.
"Significant measures" expected
She welcomed the prospect of further measures within the stadium announced by the Swiss Football Association. The licensing authorities would expect the association and the Swiss Football League (SFL) to take "clear measures" against violence in the vicinity of football matches.
The working group was pleased to note the criminal investigations initiated by the Winterthur city police and the Zurich cantonal police against the torch throwers and other hooligans. For the next season, the licensing authorities would implement the cascade model of increasingly severe sanctions. Until then, situational agreements will be made, the statement continued.
Serious riots on Sunday
Servette supporters had committed serious riots on Sunday before, during and after the match. Dozens of them stormed the pitch after the match, with some throwing pyrotechnics into the stands. They hit one person with a fire flare. Luckily, no one was injured, according to the working group.
There were clashes with the police during the arrival and departure. Flares, fireworks and stones were thrown at the police. One police officer was injured.
There was also serious damage to property. Winterthur station was closed for a long time. The Servette supporters prevented the departure of the fan train by pulling the emergency brake several times.
