The woman who stabbed her husband to death in Lauterbrunnen in the canton of Bern almost two years ago suffers from a severe mental illness. This is the conclusion of a forensic expert report, which attests that the alleged perpetrator is not guilty. The Bernese Oberland Regional Court is currently deciding whether to order inpatient treatment.
According to the expert opinion, the 60-year-old woman had been suffering from a schizophrenia spectrum disorder for several years. At the time of the crime in August 2022, she had a delusional conviction that she was being poisoned by her husband.
According to the report, the delusion is systematized, largely developed, structured and mature. The prognosis is unfavorable. Without adequate therapy, there is a significantly increased likelihood of further violent crimes.
The woman lacked insight into her illness and included the intake of medication in her delusional system. She could become a danger to a wide circle of people such as caregivers, doctors, therapists, acquaintances or neighbors if she also integrated them into her delusion.
Outpatient treatment alone cannot reduce the risk of further offenses, the public prosecutor's office writes, citing the expert opinion.
The public prosecutor's office applies to the court for the woman to be admitted to a closed psychiatric clinic as part of an inpatient measure.
The trial, which begins on May 1, will largely take place in camera. Only the verdict will be announced publicly by the Bernese Oberland Regional Court on May 6.
In mid-August 2022, there was initially a verbal argument in the couple's house in Lauterbrunnen, followed by a scuffle. The woman finally grabbed a knife and stabbed her partner.
The man, who was the mayor of Lauterbrunnen at the time, suffered 58 stab wounds and cuts from which he died. The wife confessed.
