President Amherd meets Pope Francis at the Vatican

Pope Francis received the President of the Swiss Confederation, Viola Amherd, for an audience at the Vatican on Saturday. She assured him that Switzerland supports the reconstruction of the Swiss Guard barracks and the recruitment of new Swiss Guards.
She also spoke with the Pope about the civil war in Sudan and their joint commitment to international humanitarian law and against the death penalty, Amherd wrote on the short message service X.
The new barracks for the papal Swiss Guard are not being built by the Vatican, but by a private Swiss foundation. Like the federal government and various cantons, the Vatican is making a contribution. Of the CHF 50 million required for the new building, CHF 1.5 million is still missing.
