The Sámi Museum Siida in the far north of Finland is the European Museum of the Year 2024. The museum dedicated to the culture of the Sámi people in Lapland was chosen as the winner by the EMYA jury on Saturday in Portimão, Portugal. Four Swiss museums had applied in vain.
The winning museum is characterized by its open, participatory and transparent integration process, which creates new opportunities for local communities and the general public to connect the past and present, the jury said in its statement. And it plays a leading role in bridging cultures and cultural heritage.
Other winners include museums in Poland, Greece, Estonia, the UK and Ukraine. There, the Maidan Museum in the capital Kiev received an award for saving Ukraine's cultural heritage in the midst of a time of warlike destruction.
This year, the four Swiss entries were left empty-handed: the Burgdorf Castle Museum in the canton of Bern, the Dürrenmatt Center in the canton of Neuchâtel, the Villa Bernasconi in the canton of Geneva and the Wettingen Monastery in Aargau.
In 2019, the Bern Museum of Communication was awarded the Council of Europe Museum Prize as part of the EMYA. The EMYA Prize has been awarded under the auspices of the Council of Europe since 1977.
