Pope Francis met the 34 new Swiss Guards in the Vatican on Monday morning before their defense. He called on the recruits to spend their lives not just on their laptops and cell phones, but to devote themselves to Rome and the community.
The pontiff explained that it is common among many young people to spend their free time only on the internet. He appealed to the new guardsmen to swim against the tide and get actively involved in community life. They should devote their free time to joint activities, explore Rome, discuss and share.
Such experiences would have an inward effect and accompany them throughout their lives. The Pope went on to say that he supported the project for the new barracks for the Swiss Guard, where the guardsmen could live together with their families.
Francis thanked the Swiss Guards for their presence and their service. The 34 recruits are due to take their oath in Rome in the evening. In addition to their family members, President Viola Amherd will take part in the ceremony.
