For the first time in Switzerland, the University of Applied Sciences of Eastern Switzerland has launched a project for the circular economy in rural areas in Toggenburg SG. Previously, such projects had only been carried out in urban agglomerations, the university announced on Wednesday.

The pilot project in Toggenburg called "Kleo" (competence cluster for rural development) is set to run for four years. According to the Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences (OST), it is being co-financed by the federal government and the canton of St.Gallen as part of the new regional policy.

The aim of Kleo is to promote sustainable development in rural areas. "We analyse the material cycles of the partner companies and the region, derive measures to promote the circular economy in rural areas and implement these immediately with our partner companies and organizations," explained co-overall project manager Timo Oliveri, according to the press release.

The plan is to build a "circular economy hub" in Lichtensteig. During the project and beyond its completion, this hub will be a point of contact for regional companies and organizations interested in the circular economy.

The circular economy basically means that raw materials are used for as long as possible, i.e. remain in the cycle.
