The UN Security Council in New York has called for an investigation into mass graves discovered in the Gaza Strip. "The members of the Security Council emphasized the need for accountability for violations of international law and called for investigators to be granted unhindered access to all sites of mass graves in Gaza," the United Nations announced on Friday. The most powerful UN body has been deeply concerned about the findings since the end of April. Graves containing several hundred bodies had been found near the Nasser Hospital in Chan Junis and the Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City in recent weeks.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, expressed his horror at the time and called for an independent investigation into the reasons behind the deaths. According to international humanitarian law, hospitals are entitled to very special protection. According to Türk's office, which cited information from the civil defense department controlled by the militant Hamas, some of the bodies were handcuffed.
The Israeli side had said that accusations that Israeli forces had buried the bodies of Palestinians there were unfounded. Israeli soldiers had merely examined the bodies in the grave in search of Israeli hostages.
