Thurgau FDP politician Anders Stokholm is to become the new President of the Swiss Society for the Common Good (SGG). The Board of Directors has proposed him for election as head of the association, which manages the Rütli meadow, among other things.

Stokholm has a profound understanding of the role of such organizations, the association's board announced on Friday. Stokholm, an FDP politician, is the mayor of Frauenfeld, a member of the Thurgau Grand Council and chairs the Swiss Association of Cities (SSV).

Thanks to his offices and his varied professional background, Stokholm is an excellent fit for the SGG's areas of expertise, the association said in a statement.

"I would be very pleased to be able to work for the SGG in the future," Stokholm is quoted as saying in the press release. In order to have the necessary time resources for the SGG presidency, he plans to make adjustments to the mandates.

Stokholm is to succeed Nicola Forster, who will step down in June. Forster has been at the helm of SGG since December 2020. The election of the successor will take place at the Annual General Meeting on June 21 in Basel.

Troubled times for the association

The SGG has recently experienced turbulent times. In June 2023, the association, which has managed the Rütli for 160 years and organizes the Rütil celebration on 1 August, reshuffled its board. Jürg Kallay, who was responsible for finances, had to leave the board. Kallay had been accused of trying to pull the board to the right politically with his own candidates. At the end of August 2023, Managing Director Peter Haerle also announced his resignation at the beginning of January.

Most recently, the National Council called for the administration of the Rütli meadow to be transferred to the Swiss Confederation. In mid-April of this year, the Grand Chamber adopted a motion by SVP National Councillor Thomas Aeschi (ZG). Aeschi justified the motion with the "increasingly left-progressive course" of the SGG. Outgoing SGG President Nicola Forster was on the GLP National Council list in the fall of 2023, but was not elected.
