A tragic avalanche accident on Piz Palü claims the life of a 38-year-old ski tourer, while his partner remains unharmed.
A ski tourer died in an avalanche accident on Piz Palü in the canton of Graubünden on Whit Sunday. The 38-year-old was swept several hundred meters and buried. His touring partner remained unharmed.
The victim was part of a group of four ski tourers from Italy who had climbed Piz Palü via the normal route from Diavolezza on Sunday morning, according to the Graubünden cantonal police.
At the summit, the group split up for the descent. Two climbers chose to descend via the ascent route, while the other two opted for the north flank. When the alpinist in front started down the north flank, an avalanche broke loose around midday, sweeping the man away. Rescue workers could only retrieve the 38-year-old man from the avalanche lifeless.
