Negotiations on an international pandemic agreement have come to an end in Geneva without a result. Nevertheless, it was not a failure, said the head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, at the end of the talks.

The participants in the negotiations had "done their best", he said on Friday. Representatives of 194 member states had negotiated a global agreement in Geneva on how to respond to future pandemics.

The negotiations began two years ago as a consequence of the coronavirus pandemic, which killed millions of people and had serious social and economic consequences around the world. The main points of contention in the talks are access to and the distribution of knowledge and resources to contain pandemics.
