The Federal Council is releasing CHF 41 million for the promotion of energy research. With this second tranche of the commitment credit, the funding program can continue to address issues relating to security of supply and the restructuring of the energy system until 2032.
The Sweet (Swiss Energy research for the Energy Transition) funding instrument is geared towards application-oriented research. As the Federal Council announced on Friday, it involves interdisciplinary consortia from science, industry and the state, which carry out holistic studies over a period of six to eight years.
A total credit of 136.4 million francs is available for this in the years 2021 to 2028. The funds can be allocated until 2028, with the work running until 2032. Parliament approved the first tranche for 2021 to 2024 amounting to CHF 94.9 million in 2020.
The second and final tranche now released by the Federal Council is included in the budget and takes into account the linear reduction in low-commitment expenditure of 1.4 percent, as the Federal Council went on to write. Sweet will use the money to carry out two further tenders, among other things.
Eight consortia emerged from the calls for proposals that have already been completed. In addition to universities, they primarily include the private sector, associations or societies, cantons, cities and municipalities.
