On Monday, President Viola Amherd will visit the storm areas, in the morning in Valais and in the afternoon in Ticino. She will be accompanied by representatives of the two cantonal governments and plans to meet with the municipal authorities and emergency services.
Valais and Ticino were hit by severe storms at the weekend. The damage caused by floods and landslides is enormous. At least four people lost their lives and the search is still on for missing persons.
This morning, President Viola Amherd will visit affected areas in the canton of Valais together with the Valais State Councillor Frédéric Favre, as announced by the Federal Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS). In the afternoon, Amherd will visit the canton of Ticino to assess the situation together with Christian Vitta, President of the Cantonal Government.
The army is providing assistance in the storm areas. Since Sunday morning, army helicopter crews have been providing the civilian authorities with images to clarify the extent of the damage. In Ticino, the air force supported the evacuation of around 300 people from a cut-off area with two "Super Pumas".
The army will continue to be deployed in both cantons as part of military disaster relief. Over the next few days, specialized formations will be deployed to assist the authorities and the affected population.
