Commission rejects cuts to international cooperation

The budget for international cooperation must not be cut in favor of the army. This is the demand of the Finance Committee of the Council of States. It rejected a motion to this effect and called on the responsible Foreign Affairs Committee to do the same.
The Federal Council is requesting CHF 11.27 billion for the International Cooperation Strategy (IC) for the years 2025 to 2028, as reported by the Parliamentary Services on Friday.
The Finance Committee of the Council of States (FK-S) also examined a proposal to reduce the commitment credits requested by the Federal Council. This was intended to ensure that there was scope in the budget for additional investments to rapidly strengthen the army's capabilities. The motion was rejected by 6 votes to 4 with 2 abstentions, as was reported.
In the eyes of the majority of the FK-S, the implementation of this proposal would have such a major financial impact that the strategy itself would be called into question. The FK-S wanted to avoid this. It was also emphasized that the entire Ukraine aid had also been integrated into the IC loan. The Commission will forward its considerations to the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Council of States (FAC-S).
