Deliveries by the Swiss cement industry continued to fall in the second quarter of 2024. In total, cement deliveries from April to June amounted to 956,157 tons, which corresponds to a decrease of 8% compared to the same period last year, as the association Cemsuisse announced on Tuesday.

Nevertheless, the decline has slowed somewhat compared to the previous year. Cemsuisse continues to cite the uncertain economic policy situation, supply chain problems and comparatively "rather high" energy prices as reasons for the ongoing decline in volumes. The markets are being stabilized by various projects in civil engineering, while no rapid recovery is expected in the weakening residential construction sector.

At 96.4%, the proportion of low-CO2 cement types is already at a high level, the report continues. The proportion of cement transported by rail also increased slightly compared to the previous year: A total of 37.9 percent of Swiss cement was transported by rail. This is a peak value in an international comparison.
