Intelligence service keeps a low profile on Russian attack plans

Following the revelation of possible attack plans by the Russian government against the head of the German armaments company Rheinmetall, the Federal Intelligence Service is keeping a low profile on the threat situation for employees of armaments companies in Switzerland. It does not comment on individual cases or operational activities, it said at the request of Keystone-SDA.
The Federal Intelligence Service (FIS) also does not comment on media reports, a spokeswoman said on Friday. In the event of any concrete indications, the FIS always informs the relevant authorities.
The Russian, Chinese, Iranian and some other intelligence services are known for a whole range of other activities in addition to espionage. These ranged from harassment and intimidation of opposition members or embassy employees to kidnappings, attacks and acts of sabotage.
The Federal Office of Police (Fedpol) is also not aware of any threats or plans to attack employees of Swiss arms companies such as Ruag, as it announced on Friday in response to an inquiry. In addition, members of private companies are not covered by Fedpol's protection mandate.
At the same time, the Swiss armaments group Ruag said in response to an inquiry that security measures and precautions were not related to the alleged attack plans. The specific nature of the measures would not be communicated. Ruag takes the safety of its employees very seriously.
According to a report by the US broadcaster CNN, US intelligence agencies uncovered plans by the Russian government to assassinate Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger at the beginning of the year. According to the CNN report, the plot was part of a planned series of assassinations of executives from defense companies across Europe. Meanwhile, the Kremlin denied the reports of Russian assassination plans on Friday.
