At a meeting with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, China emphasized its willingness to play a mediating role in the war with Russia.
"Even if the conditions and timing are not yet ripe, we support all efforts that are conducive to peace and are willing to play a constructive role in ending the conflict and resuming peace talks," Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said at a meeting with Kuleba in the southern Chinese metropolis of Guangzhou, according to Chinese sources.
According to Wang Yi, China believes that all conflicts must ultimately be resolved at the negotiating table. Recently, both Ukraine and Russia have signaled to varying degrees that they are willing to enter into negotiations.
According to Chinese sources, Kuleba said that Ukraine was ready to enter into negotiations with Russia. They should aim to achieve a just and lasting peace. Kuleba also said that Ukraine had "carefully studied" a peace plan proposed by China and Brazil.
Advances from China and Brazil
China is Russia's most important ally. The People's Republic maintains close economic and political ties with Moscow. Beijing is therefore considered to have a great deal of influence over Russia's actions in Ukraine. The country likes to present itself as neutral to the outside world. However, Western countries repeatedly accuse China of supporting Moscow's defense industry and thus the war by exporting important technology and equipment.
Beijing canceled the recent peace conference on the Ukraine war in Switzerland. In May, the Chinese, together with Brazil, proposed a plan that included a peace conference recognized by Ukraine and Russia and the discussion of all plans.
