The Viamala Tunnel on the A13 national highway was closed on Saturday morning following a collision. This led to major traffic jams on the north-south axis in Graubünden. The Gotthard tunnel, the second important traffic axis between Ticino and the north of Switzerland, also experienced major traffic obstructions on Saturday.

Shortly before 10.20 a.m., there was a collision between two vehicles in oncoming traffic in the Viamala Tunnel, as Jürgen Rüegg, spokesman for the Graubünden cantonal police, told the Keystone-SDA news agency on request. One person sustained minor injuries to his hand. The tunnel had to be closed for around two hours.

Due to the large volume of traffic, especially heading north, there was a traffic jam as a result. Traffic is now moving slowly, said Rüegg. According to online traffic information from the Touring Club of Switzerland (TCS), motorists traveling northbound had to expect a delay of up to one hour between Andeer GR and Zillis GR.

Gotthard temporarily closed

Traffic was also backed up on the Gotthard axis heading north in the early hours of Saturday afternoon. According to the TCS, the waiting time in front of the south portal was up to one hour and 40 minutes.

The tunnel had previously been temporarily closed to northbound traffic. This was due to road closures in the canton of Uri. Both the Seelisbertunnel and the Axenstrasse had to be closed due to accidents. The Gotthard tunnel was closed to prevent further congestion on the Uri side.

However, there was some traffic relief heading south. According to the TCS, traffic was backed up for around six kilometers before Göschenen UR shortly before 2.00 pm. On Saturday morning, there was a traffic jam of around eleven kilometers on the same section.
