More guests stayed in Swiss hotels in June than in the previous year. After the first half of the year, the industry is therefore well on the way to surpassing last year's record number of overnight stays.
In June, overnight stays increased by 2.4% year-on-year to 4.1 million, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Monday. This was due to the increase in guests from abroad. Here, overnight stays rose by just under 5 percent, while hotels had to accept a decline of 0.6 percent among domestic guests.
Record in sight
The picture for the first half of the year is similar to that of June. Overall, the number of overnight stays from January to June also rose by 2.4% to 20.1 million. The number of foreign tourists rose by 5.2% to 10.1 million. As the number of domestic guests fell by 0.2% to 10.0 million, just over half of overnight stays were again booked from abroad.
Overall, the Swiss hotel industry remains on course to beat the guest record set in 2023. At that time, the 40 million mark was broken for the first time with 41.8 million overnight stays. Whether a new record will be reached also depends heavily on the number of overnight stays in the peak season months of July and August.
