Horst Lettenmayer's eyes and legs have been featured in the opening credits of "Tatort" crime dramas for more than five decades. The former actor and lighting producer died on July 20, as his daughter Julia-Alina Lettenmayer confirmed to the German Press Agency. He was buried in Munich on July 31. It would have been his 83rd birthday.

With few exceptions, Horst Lettenmayer has stared through a slit into the living rooms of Germany, Switzerland and Austria every Sunday since the "Tatort" series began. A white crosshair surrounds his left iris before the dramatic music of Klaus Doldinger plays.

Lettenmayer was paid a one-off 400 marks for his performance - not knowing that the recordings would achieve cult status and be used for decades.
