BA opens criminal investigation on suspicion of espionage

In March 2023, the Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland opened a criminal investigation against a man on suspicion of spying for a foreign state. He is currently in custody.
The Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland (OAG) accuses the man of providing political, economic and military intelligence services for a foreign state, according to decisions by the Federal Criminal Court in April and May of this year. These are available to the Keystone-SDA news agency. The Tamedia newspapers first reported on this on Wednesday.
The decisions of the Federal Criminal Court relate to appeals by the suspect against surveillance and monitoring measures by the federal government. However, these appeals were dismissed as inadmissible. Accordingly, the OAG had ordered the surveillance of the man in September 2023, which was approved by the Bern Coercive Measures Court.
According to Tamedia's research, the North Korea expert with good contacts to North Korean diplomats in Geneva is said to have spied for China. The Federal Intelligence Service (FIS) is said to have observed a Chinese agent meeting the man in Geneva restaurants as early as 2021. He was then allegedly questioned by the Geneva police in March 2024. He has been in custody ever since.
