Customs officers at the Swiss-Italian border crossing at Ponte Chiasso (I) have discovered travellers' cheques worth ten million US dollars on a 64-year-old man. According to the police, the pensioner has a criminal record.

The pensioner had hidden the cheques under the car seat, in his luggage and in an envelope, according to the Italian financial police on Monday. According to their information, the traveler's checks have a total value of ten million US dollars.

Before the check, the man had stated that he was not carrying any valuables. He wanted to enter Italy from Switzerland in a small car.

The cheques discovered were so-called travelers cheques. These are checks that can be exchanged for cash when traveling.
