The Federal Council rejects the call to additionally promote the use of Swiss wood. It rejects a motion calling for construction companies to be able to use Swiss timber without having to pay more than foreign timber.
The motion was submitted by forestry entrepreneur Daniel Ruch (FDP) from the canton of Vaud. Thirty National Councillors from a total of five parliamentary groups support the motion, which will next be decided on by the National Council.
The motion calls for the use of Swiss wood to be promoted in private buildings subsidized by the federal government. Wood is a completely renewable building material and is sufficiently available in Switzerland, but is still underused, wrote Ruch.
Subsidized private timber buildings should therefore have to be built with Swiss timber. Ruch noted that many owners cannot afford the more expensive Swiss wood for construction and therefore resort to wood from abroad.
The Federal Council rejected the request in its statement published on Thursday, also citing the tight federal finances. It also points out that the requested new funding approach could distort competition.
The federal government already promotes the sale and utilization of sustainably produced wood, the Federal Council also wrote. In the planning, construction and operation of its own buildings and facilities, the Confederation promotes the use of sustainably produced wood as far as appropriate. This is provided for in the Forest Act.
