The Federal Council has approved Switzerland's membership of the European Cyber Security Organization. The aim is to strengthen cyber security in Switzerland and coordinate with European partners, as announced by the national government.
The approximately 300 members of the European Cyber Security Organization (ECSO) include large companies, SMEs and start-ups, research centers, universities, associations as well as local, regional and national public administrations of the member states of the EU, the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and the European Economic Area (EEA).
Swiss companies and research institutions are also already involved in ECSO. The organization was founded in Belgium in 2016, originally as a non-profit association. According to the Federal Council, it is now the only European cross-sector and independent member organization for cybersecurity. ECSO brings together and represents public and private European cybersecurity stakeholders and promotes their cooperation.
From the Federal Council's point of view, membership of ECSO allows it to obtain important information on current technology decisions and developments as well as access to expert networks, as it announced on Wednesday.
Thanks to ECSO membership, the relevant federal agencies have access to ECSO's recommendations for EU research programs - such as Horizon Europe or Digital Europe - and have the opportunity to propose their own priorities in the area of cybersecurity, the report continued.
