German opposition leader Friedrich Merz has offered Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) a joint approach to significantly curb irregular migration as a consequence of the terrorist attack in Solingen.

The Christian Democrats want to solve this together with the coalition or those parts of the coalition that are of good will, said the CDU chairman after talks with Scholz in Berlin. The Social Democrats and Christian Democrats could implement this alone without having to take into account the Greens and FDP as government partners.

Merz emphasized that this was "expressly not a request to join a coalition." Specifically, he offered Scholz to allow a quick vote in the Bundestag on urgent legislative changes. Prior to this, one person from the government side and one from the CDU/CSU side should name the relevant areas of legislation.

On Friday evening, three people were killed with a knife at the city festival in Solingen (North Rhine-Westphalia). Eight people were injured, four of them seriously. The alleged perpetrator is a 26-year-old Syrian who is now in custody. The German federal prosecutor's office is investigating him for murder and on suspicion of being a member of the IS terrorist militia. The latter claimed responsibility for the attack.
