The Federal Council should not have to ask the city of Geneva and the surrounding area to host one of the future United Nations climate conferences. After the Council of States, the responsible National Council committee also does not want to follow up on a corresponding initiative by the Canton of Geneva with this request.

The Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Council (FAC-N) has decided by 14 votes to 10 not to support the Geneva initiative. This was announced by the parliamentary services on Tuesday.

According to the communication, the majority of the Commission considers such a conference to be too resource-intensive, particularly in terms of financial and human resources. In their view, Switzerland is already very active at the diplomatic level.

According to the communiqué, the minority is of the opinion that Switzerland should actively engage in the area of climate change - all the more so as the associated challenges are becoming increasingly important in the international debate.

The National Council will now deal with the initiative. The Council of States did not approve the initiative in March of this year.
