A new collective financial target for investments in global climate protection will be discussed at the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference in Baku. Environment Minister Albert Rösti will be attending the climate conference on behalf of Switzerland.
The Federal Council approved the mandate of the Swiss delegation on Friday, as announced. Switzerland is committed to strengthening investment in climate protection and ensuring that all countries contribute to this according to their means. The Federal Council believes that wealthy countries with high greenhouse gas emissions in particular should contribute financially.
The 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) will take place from November 11 to 22 in the capital of Azerbaijan.
The parties to the Paris Agreement agreed that the industrialized countries would make 100 billion US dollars (almost 85 billion Swiss francs) available annually for climate protection measures in developing countries by 2025, it was reported. This target was reached for the first time in 2022.
New climate targets by 2035
The new collective financial target for the period after 2025 is now to be adopted. Furthermore, according to the communiqué, a global mechanism is to be developed that will enable countries to implement climate protection projects abroad and have the emission reductions achieved counted towards their climate target. Finally, the countries' new climate targets for the period up to 2035 are to be prepared.
Environment Minister Rösti will take part in the final negotiations on behalf of Switzerland. The Swiss delegation will be led by Environment Ambassador Felix Wertli.
The Federal Council will now consult the Foreign Affairs Committees of the Councils (FAC) on the mandate. As the Federal Council wrote, the mandate will be deemed approved if the committees do not express any reservations.
