Graubünden can build new training center for civil defence

The canton of Graubünden can build a new training center for civil defence. The new building, which will cost almost 19 million francs, was uncontested at the ballot box on Sunday, as it had previously been in parliament.
42,607 voters were in favor of the Minergie-P-Eco house, while 12,563 were against, corresponding to a 77.23 percent "yes" vote. The turnout was 40.05 percent, as the registrar's office announced on Wednesday.
The new training building is being built on the Meiersboda civil defense site in Churwalden on the city limits of Chur. It will replace the existing cantonal training building from the 1970s. The new center will once again provide a modern infrastructure for basic and cadre training in civil defence throughout the canton.
The need for the new building was undisputed in the cantonal parliament in April. The existing 50-year-old building no longer meets today's requirements. The current project was praised across the board in the Grand Council for its holistic and future-oriented approach to sustainable construction.
The excavators are expected to start work at Meiersboda in spring 2025. The new training building should be operational by the end of 2027. The old one will then be demolished.
