The "Neue Zürcher Zeitung" (NZZ) comments on the rejection of the pension fund reform as follows:

"A highly unholy alliance has sunk the bill on occupational pensions. There is no need to shed any tears over the legislative project. (...)

The excessive pension minimum only applies to the mandatory occupational pension scheme and therefore to an estimated 15 percent of pension funds and insured persons. The others have a lot of extra-mandatory capital, so that mathematically appropriate pensions are already possible today using a mixed calculation.

The status quo is a nuisance for the problem cash registers. But they can solve their problem themselves. Either as before by hidden cross-subsidization of pensioners at the expense of younger people. (...) Or by expanding pension plans with non-compulsory elements. The trend away from purely mandatory pension plans began a long time ago and is likely to continue with Sunday's referendum."
