For the Swiss Farmers' Union, the electorate has recognized the negative impact of the biodiversity initiative on food production, the expansion of renewable energies and the construction industry. The Greens believe that a new attempt to protect biodiversity is necessary.
In addition to the harmful side effects of the referendum, the voters had recognized how much was already being done for biodiversity. A package of measures has been drawn up.
The Greens regret the rejection of the biodiversity initiative, as they announced. A new attempt will be needed. The problem that a third of all species and half of all habitats in Switzerland are under threat has not disappeared with the No vote. The Federal Council must stand by its promise to protect biodiversity within the framework of existing laws.
Instead of saving on nature and environmental protection, as intended, more investment is needed in the "bulwark against global warming" and the basis of food production - intact nature.
