The number of occupational and leisure accidents and occupational illnesses remained stable in 2023. The 22 accident insurers in Switzerland recorded a total of around 908,000 cases, 0.3% fewer than in the previous year.

Occupational and non-occupational accident insurance developed differently, as accident insurer Suva and the Swiss Insurance Association (SIA) announced on Tuesday. The number of occupational illnesses and occupational accidents fell by 2.4 percent to 286,000. The number of leisure accidents, on the other hand, continued to rise. Insurers registered 607,000 cases. That is one percent more than in 2022.

All accident insurers together paid out CHF 6.9 billion in insurance benefits last year, mainly for medical costs, daily allowances and provisions for disability and survivors' pensions. The final amount of benefits paid out in 2023 is not yet known. Two thirds (63%) of these costs are attributable to non-occupational accidents.

Suva records more occupational accidents

The accident statistics also look at the differences between Suva, which is obliged to insure almost the entire industrial and commercial sector, and the other insurers, which mainly cover the service sector.

This distinction explains why the number of occupational accidents among people insured with Suva is twice as high (83 accidents per 1000 full-time employees) as with other insurers. It also has an impact on premiums. In 2022, Suva collected CHF 1.6 billion in premiums (0.9 percent of the insured payroll), while the other insurers collected CHF 400 million (0.2 percent).
