Young wolves in Graubünden may be killed after objections

Two thirds of the young wolves of the Rügiul pack in southern Grisons may be killed, according to the cantonal official gazette on Tuesday. This is a ruling that was stopped by nature conservation organizations in December 2023.
At the time, Pro Natura, WWF Switzerland and Birdlife Switzerland applied to the Federal Administrative Court for suspensive effect. According to a joint press release at the time, the authorities had disregarded all proportionality with the shooting orders and ignored the important role of the wolf in the forest habitat.
Now the cantonal department responsible announced on Tuesday morning that it had given the go-ahead for the kill. Up to two thirds of the pack's young wolves may be killed by January 31.
Attention should be paid to a so-called deterrent effect. The wolves should be shot directly from the pack, as close as possible to livestock herds, settlements or facilities heavily used by humans. Shooting in places where this learning effect is lacking should be avoided.
