Following the start of the Israeli ground offensive in Lebanon, the UN Human Rights Office warns of a humanitarian catastrophe in the Middle East.
"We are deeply concerned about the escalating hostilities in the Middle East and their potential to plunge the entire region into a humanitarian and human rights catastrophe," said Liz Throssell, spokesperson for the office in Geneva.
The danger of other countries in the region being drawn into the military conflict is very real. The ground offensive is likely to further exacerbate the suffering of the civilian population. The Houthi attacks on Israel and the Israeli counter-attacks are also "deeply worrying".
