Around 30 members of the Swiss Armed Forces have contracted norovirus. To prevent further spread of the disease, those who have fallen ill have been isolated from the rest of the troops and are receiving medical care.
Those affected are suffering from gastrointestinal complaints, as the army announced on Friday. Members of the army from Medical School 42 in Airolo TI and Artillery Division 1 in Bière VD have fallen ill. The two bouts of infection occurred independently of each other, an army spokesperson told the Keystone-SDA news agency on request.
According to the communiqué, the main symptoms of norovirus disease are vomiting, fever and diarrhea. Normally, the illness lasts up to 72 hours and heals without any consequential damage in healthy young people. The virus is transmitted relatively easily from person to person. There are frequent outbreaks in communal facilities such as barracks or homes.
