Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz has confirmed that controls at Germany's borders will continue for as long as possible. "We will do this for as long as we can. And that will be a very long time," said Scholz in the program "RTL Direkt spezial - Am Tisch mit Olaf Scholz", which will be broadcast this evening. However, he also admitted that the controls were causing "a lot of trouble at the moment".
Since September 16, checks have been carried out at all German borders in order to reduce the number of people entering the country without authorization. The checks at the land borders with Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg are new. There have already been temporary controls at the border with France since the end of July due to the Olympic Games. Checks have been in place at the borders with Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria and Switzerland for some time. The decision had caused some irritation in neighboring countries.
