Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis wants to use Switzerland's presidency of the UN Security Council to commit the body to a further commitment to science. To this end, the Federal Council intends to present a presidency declaration in New York.
He hopes that Switzerland will return from New York with a corresponding declaration, said the head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs on Friday in Meyrin GE. The Security Council must be aware of the global dynamics of science. Mr. Cassis took part in the summit of the Gesda Foundation for Science Diplomacy.
On October 21, the Foreign Minister will chair a discussion in the UN Security Council on the effects of science and technology on security and peace. As Cassis explained, the international community must anticipate "a new type of conflict that we want to avoid" and define rules and limits.
On Friday, the "Anticipator on Science and Diplomacy" (Gesda) foundation launched its anticipation portal, its second major initiative, at the end of its summit. The foundation, which is supported by the federal government, aims to promote scientific exchange and prevent a "cold war" in science.
