Bern-based software company Xplain is sold abroad

The Bern-based IT service provider Xplain is being taken over by the Swiss subsidiary of the German Chapters Group based in Hamburg. The software company had become known for a cyberattack in 2023 with consequences for the Federal Administration.
At the time, hackers had attacked a vulnerability on the IT service provider's servers with blackmail software. They stole data from the Federal Administration and published it on the darknet. Both companies will continue to operate independently under their current owners, according to a press release issued by Xplain on Thursday.
CEO Andreas Löwinger will retain his position until a successor is found. All projects will also be continued. This also includes the development partner Xplain Ibérica.
At the beginning of May this year, the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC) published three investigation reports on the data leak. He came to the conclusion that both the Confederation and Xplain had made mistakes and made a number of recommendations.
