ETH researchers develop snake-like robot for disasters

Researchers at ETH Zurich have developed a snake-like robot that can be deployed after disasters. The robot could, for example, make contact with buried people.
The robot called "RoBoa" is equipped with a microphone and loudspeakers and is up to 100 meters long, as ETH Zurich announced on Monday. This enables direct communication in emergency situations. Liquids could also reach people via the robot.
RoBoa, developed in the Autonomous Systems Lab at ETH, moves flexibly and efficiently through narrow spaces such as pipes or ducts or searches through debris after disasters. Soft materials and the use of compressed air also make the robot safe for dangerous environments with a risk of explosion, where sparks must be avoided.
Originally developed as part of a student focus project, RoBoa is now about to be launched on the market thanks to a Pioneer Fellowship and could have a decisive impact on inspection and rescue operations in the future, according to ETH.
