The top-level meetings of the German "traffic light" coalition on economic and financial policy are to continue on Wednesday.

Two further meetings are planned for the morning and afternoon between Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) and Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) as well as with state secretaries, according to information from coalition circles obtained by the German Press Agency in Berlin.

In the governing coalition of Social Democrats, Liberals and Greens, which has been in power since December 2021, the latent and ever-present tensions are now threatening to escalate due to differences in economic and fiscal policy. This month, the federal budget for the coming year has to be finalized and a billion-euro gap has to be closed.

The next federal election is scheduled for September 28, 2025. However, it is not ruled out that the coalition will break up and new elections will be held in March. According to current polls, all three "traffic light" parties would have to expect painful losses.
