Inflation and immigration were the deciding factors in Donald Trump's election. This is what Tariq Dennison, member of the Republicans Overseas organization in Switzerland, says.

"I'm relieved", says the financial expert, who lives in Weinfelden TG and works in Zug. He is "very pleased" with the Republican candidate's election victory and his political and economic program.

"As I said in 2016, Trump will not do as much as his fans hope or his critics fear": this is how Dennison summarizes his expectations for Trump's new presidency. "I think he will introduce many small changes to improve the economy and people's everyday lives in concrete ways.

He will not turn everything upside down with major changes". There will not be a Trump revolution, Dennison explains.

"I have confidence in democracy and the constitution of the United States. The country's institutions are strong. If the Democrats keep the House of Representatives in Congress, then we will once again have a policy based on compromise, which I don't dislike," he explains.

People did not feel the good situation

The feeling of uncertainty also tipped the scales in favor of Trump's election: "People did not feel the country's improved economic situation in their everyday lives. They were fixated on inflation and purchasing power," he observes.

In his opinion, there is a big gap between the political sphere, the macroeconomy and the reality in the wallet, and he added: "People will always blame the incumbent president, rightly or wrongly."

However, Dennison was disappointed that the personalities of the candidates had overshadowed the factual issues: "A democracy only really works if the population knows the political agenda of the individual parties," he said.

And when it comes to Donald Trump's political language, which ranges from maliciousness to vulgarity, Tariq Dennison says that he doesn't always agree with his communication style: "However, I remain convinced that he is loved above all for his incorrect, different, unfiltered and truly open manner". "And you don't vote for perfection," he concludes.
