In the view of the Yes committee, the problem has only been postponed with the No vote on the highway expansion. Traffic jams and avoidance traffic continue to cost the economy and society billions every year.

Switzerland would therefore have to continue living with a transport infrastructure that was planned 60 years ago, wrote the "Yes to safeguarding the motorways" committee on Sunday. The opponents of the bill are closing their eyes to this fact. And they had failed to show how the problem of increasing traffic jams could be solved.

Switzerland's prosperity depends on a functioning transport infrastructure, the report continued. There is still an urgent need for action.

The Yes campaign was supported by the Swiss Trade Association (SGV), the automobile associations TCS and ACS, the business umbrella organization Economiesuisse and the commercial vehicle association Astag, among others. In a communiqué, the ACS complained that the electorate had failed to recognize the importance of the expansion plans.

Auto-Schweiz, the association of car importers, was also part of the alliance. In a press release, it called for the elimination of bottlenecks in the highway network to be tackled with individual proposals in future following the "no" to the package approach.
