The SVP is calling for an immediate reduction in fuel tax following the "no" to the highway expansion. For the FDP, the result is the consequence of a destructive campaign by the left.

The SVP wrote on Sunday that the No to relieving the national roads was particularly bad news for trade and industry. This is because over 70 percent of freight transportation takes place on the roads.

The party described immigration as the real reason for the increase in congestion and avoidance traffic. Last year alone, more than 140,000 net additional people came to Switzerland. The rejection of the highway projects was the voters' response to the irresponsible policies of the other parties and business associations.

The FDP accused the left-wing opponents of expansion of a populist fear campaign in the style of US President-elect Donald Trump. The result is a reform backlog. The "ideologized left" is increasingly receiving support from the SVP: "The SVP's formerly conservative base is once again crumbling, having already voted with the trade unions on two pension proposals this year."

The center expressed itself more cautiously. They regret the rejection of the bill, they wrote. A well-functioning road network contributes to the cohesion of Switzerland. The decision must now be accepted and other solutions found.
